St. Valentine's Day Massacre
By: Lauren Staley
February 14th, 1929, seven men were killed in a
garage on the North side of Chicago. In the prohibition era, gangs ruled many of
the large cities, however with gangs, comes rivals. There were two dominate
gangs in Chicago. One ruled by Al Capone, and the other by George“Bugs” Morgan.
Both gangs wanted the ultimate power of ruling Chicago, thus leading to the St.
Valentine’s Day Massacre. In 1929, Al Capone was out of town visiting the victim
of an attempted assassination by Morgan. Capone began plotting revenge by
selecting a gunman. Capone led Morgan to a scam of buying a very nice band of
whiskey or little money. Morgan agreed to meet the man selling the whiskey at
10:30, February 14th in an old garage. When Morgan arrived, bullets
were fired and 6 gang members were killed. After“Morgan” was brought to the
hospital they realized he was actually Albert Weinshank. The real George Morgan
arrived at the garage a few minutes late and noticed an unusual car outside and
avoided the situation, saving his life. Al Capone was never arrested.

The Monkey
Trial
By: James
Mueggenberg
One of the most controversial events in the 1920s was the Scopes’ Trial,
also known as the Monkey Trial.
This was the case where a school teacher, John Scopes, was put on trial
for teaching his students that the theory of evolution was fact.
Many of the families that believed in creationism didn’t like Scopes
teaching their kids this, and complained to the schools.
Scopes was soon put on trial and found guilty and fined $100 for his
offense. Later in the future the
ruling was overturned on a technicality and scopes was given his $100 back. The teaching of evolution is still a
controversy to this day, and until it is either proven or disproven, events like
this will continue to happen.

First liquid fueled rockets-
Robert H. Goddard invented the First liquid fueled rocket. This invention was one of the biggest things
that happened in the 1920’s. It allowed people later to explore space. The first
successful launch was in Auburn, Massachusetts. The rocket traveled for 2.5 seconds at
a speed of about 60 mph, reaching an altitude of 41 feet and landing 184 feet
away. Later on people used them as weapons in the upcoming wars.
